Why Your Energy Shifts Each Season: A Feng Shui Guide

Written By Reeta Vaya

As we settle into Autumn here in London, have you noticed your energy shifting? Changing gear? As a Feng Shui consultant, I see this shift every year. Beyond the weather turning cooler (a welcome relief for some after the many heatwaves) and that urge to cosy up with hot tea and yummy cake (yes I googled a lamingtons recipe), the environmental elements change too.

🍁 Clarity in Autumn

Metal Energy - The leaves and blossoms that flourished in summer now fall, returning vital nutrients to the earth. As energy descends, we naturally turn inward toward cosier spaces. The Metal element sharpens your thinking and cuts away the noise you don't need. Use this precision to finalise decisions that were perhaps harder to make earlier, solve problems, and get ready to close the chapter you're in.

❄️ Renewal in Winter

Water Energy - Winter is the peak expression of Yin, the natural energy of rest, stillness, and darkness, just like night or the moon. Water turns icy, barely moving. Beneath the frozen surface, the earth consolidates nutrients in preparation for spring. Treat this as an incubation phase: give yourself permission to slow down, rest deeply, and reflect on the quiet insights gathered over the year.

🌱 New Beginnings in Spring

Wood Energy - The ground warms up and conditions ripe for new life to emerge, daffodils push through the soil which is why Wood energy is known as rising chi. This is the moment for fresh ideas, new ventures, and forward momentum. What you nourish flourishes.

🔥 Momentum in Summer

Fire Energy - The peak of Yang energy, where nature reaches full bloom. It's the most vibrant season of passion, drive, expansion, and rapid momentum. But energy cannot stay at peak volume indefinitely unless we are robots; naturally, it begins to soften toward Autumn, ready to reset the cycle. Just as day gives way to night and the sun gives way to the moon.

Okay, but what if I experience all 4 seasons in a single day?

In our hectic fast-paced world, the 4 seasons probably go through 20 cycles in your day! Feng shui has 5 elements, not 4. Earth may not be a season, but it's the grounding force. One season cannot simply jump to the next. Earth element is the transitional phase between every season.

There's easy ways to bring in the steady earth element into our day.

  • Taking a deep breath before answering an annoying question.
  • When someone cuts you off in traffic, Fire wants you to lean on the horn. Earth doesn't want the bad vibes and simply says, they're just in a rush.
  • It's looking away from your screen to sip tea whilst looking out the window observing a tree, someone walking by, or the clouds in the sky.
  • When you are recovering from an illness (yes lots of bugs going around atm), you might get restless at home. Earth allows the body to actually heal so resist the urge to rush back to the office; take one extra day to rest or work from home if you can.
  • Arrive a few minutes early to appointments. It settles your energy after travelling, shows you value the other person's time, and gives you a moment of Earth before the next task. In an office, no one likes back-to-back meetings with zero breaks!
  • At night, Earth is the buffer between screen-time (Fire) and sleep. When experts say "put your phone away an hour before bed," put another way, that's 1 hour of Earth's grounding energy.

So you see, it's fine to experience 4 seasons in a day. Just make time for the earth element, because it settles all the other elements, making them work together more harmoniously.
